Boston Mayor Mayor Wu Addresses President Trump's Warning to Move FIFA World Cup Games from City
The mayor of Boston, Mayor Wu, suggested that the city was ready for a face-off with President Donald Trump regarding his claim that he could instruct FIFA to relocate World Cup matches from the stadium in Foxborough, situated approximately 35 kilometers south-west of the city.
Mayor Wu appeared on a local podcast this week to answer criticism from the White House, which had labeled her as "far-left." Trump had threatened that he would call FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "clean up its act."
Much of it is locked down by agreement so that no one, even if they live in the White House, can reverse it.
She added, "We live in a time where for attention, for power, to test limits ... repeated warnings ... are issued at people and cities who stand their ground and submit or be obedient to a hateful agenda."
She also remarked, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, sadly, we are going to be in a conversation that is challenging what Boston stands for." She concluded by emphasizing her support for the city, saying, "Fully committed for Boston."
Trump's Comments and FIFA's Role
Recently, Infantino was photographed alongside President Trump at the Gaza summit in Egypt. Infantino has also visited the Oval Office and given World Cup and Club World Cup awards to the president as presents.
Earlier, Trump was asked about recent disturbances in South Boston that involved a police car being set on fire. Trump responded, "If things aren't handled well, and if I feel there's danger, I would call Infantino – the president of the organization, who's great."
He continued, "I'd tell him: 'We should relocate the games' and they would comply. He might not prefer it. But he would do it without hesitation." Trump also specifically targeted Wu, saying, "Boston's mayor is ineffective ... she's far-left, and they're dominating some areas in Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"
Past Threats and 2026 World Cup Information
President Trump has made previous comments that he would take the same conversation with Infantino about relocating matches from other host cities, which are part of the 16 locations across the continent.
The US is joint hosts the 2026 tournament with neighboring countries. The 48-team event is scheduled to be played from 11 June to 19 July next summer.
