Typhoon Matmo Hit Coastal China Bringing Massive Relocations

The powerful storm struck the coast on the coastal regions of China on Sunday afternoon, following its passage over the provincial island of Hainan. The severe weather forced the relocation of around 350,000 residents, delivering heavy downpours and damaging winds, particularly between Guangdong's Wuchuan and Wenchang in Hainan. Ferry services were halted and flights cancelled at Haikou Meilan airport.

Typhoon Statistics

The typhoon, this year's 21st typhoon of 2025, had sustained wind speeds of 151km/h and poured over 50mm of precipitation in a short period in Chongzou and Qinzhou. The city of the region also experienced significant rain amounts.

The storm triggered China's highest-level red alert, with disruptions in the city, where businesses, transport links and highways were shut. In Hong Kong, numerous air services were impacted and 30 cancelled.

Future Projections

As the typhoon advances inward towards Cao Bang province in Vietnam, it is projected to weaken into a less intense system with 55mph winds but will persist to bring heavy rainfall. Vietnam's northern regions could experience significant rainfall on Monday, raising the risk of flooding and mudslides. The weather pattern is expected to move towards Yunnan province in China, where further intense rain is probable.

Global Weather Events

Meanwhile, Hurricane Priscilla formed off Mexico's Pacific coast on Saturday night, initially as a tropical storm. It led to a storm watch for the southwestern areas from Punta San Telmo to another location on the start of the week.

In the morning of Sunday, the hurricane was about 491 kilometers from a Mexican cape with sustained winds of 65mph. It intensified into a hurricane in the evening, when sustained winds peaked at 121km/h.

Although unlikely to make landfall, the storm is likely to generate dangerous waves and rip currents as it moves northwestward along the coast towards a Mexican state. Substantial rain is forecast on the coming day, reaching a considerable volume in specific Mexican states, with some areas at about 20 centimeters. Colima and western Jalisco could receive 50-100mm.

In other parts, Cyclone Shakhti has formed as the first post-monsoon storm system of 2025 in the a body of water, causing an alert from the India Meteorological Department for Maharashtra. On Sunday, the cyclone was 130 miles southeast of a location in Oman with maximum sustained winds of 64mph.

The storm, which has moved in a southwestern direction and weakened, is forecast to recurve eastward into the the sea. Turbulent waters are likely to persist along the Gujarat-North Maharashtra coast and heavy rainfall is anticipated in shoreline areas including Dwarka, Jamnagar and Surat.
