Youth Discovered Dead Following False Allegations of Stealing Ashes
One 14-year-old youth was found dead only a few days following being wrongly blamed of taking the cremated remains of a deceased infant during a break-in, a coroner's inquiry has heard.
Tragic Discovery
The young boy's parents found his body in his bedroom at his Flintshire home on 19 November 2021.
False Allegations Begin
The inquest heard how his mother received a message on 8 November 2021 via online platforms, from a individual inquiring if her son was her child. The communication added: "Inform him appreciation for breaking into my flat."
In a statement presented to the court, the mother said the individual had been in the news, claiming her infant's ashes had been stolen in a burglary - a allegation which was false.
Law Enforcement Investigation
An investigation report from police later determined the supposed burglary complainant had "provided false information" and "it now appears that the property was never taken in the beginning".
News coverage about the supposed taken remains generated online comments, and although Kai was not identified in the messages, his mother said people "knew it was him".
The "social media content were really upsetting", she stated.
Mental Health Effect
She added that Kai had been diagnosed with mild ADHD, and as part of that condition, other peoples' opinions really mattered to him.
"It would have hurt him deeply," she said, "particularly when this was not true".
The teenager was arrested at his residence, but nothing was discovered. He was taken to a police station and later released pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in touch, the hearing learned, but had failed to reached out to the family by the moment of his passing.
Withdrawal and Worry
His parent said her son "became isolated" after the arrest and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like days".
When she spoke to him about the supposed burglary, she said her child told her he had entered the residence because the resident who lived there had said he could utilize the toilet whenever he wanted, but denied removing anything.
Online Bullying
In a combined testimony between her and her husband, the mother said her child was being harassed online after the allegations.
The proceedings learned that a 19-year-old urged the teenager to end his life.
She had no concerns on the night before he passed away, explaining how she had heard him "laughing and teasing".
She described him as a "caring, affectionate" young man, and said her "family is completely shattered".
He had been "clearly hiding his concerns", she stated, noting that he could not stand to have anybody "think bad of him".
School Response
The hearing heard from educational personnel at Connah's Quay High School.
On November 8th, she "overheard some students discussing that Kai had been detained and that was the initial I heard".
"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the conversation, the educator said she rang the family's family landline and left a message saying she had spoken to Kai about the accusations.
The proceedings learned his parents said they never receive that communication.
Official Conclusion
Senior coroner told the inquest he would wait for documents regarding what enhancements had been made to dealing with suspects with the condition, before determining whether he should make a prevention of subsequent deaths report.
Delivering a descriptive finding, he stated: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old child.
"Probably falsehoods were subsequently exaggerated and exaggerated through the platform of social media.
"During 11 November, he was interviewed by the authorities and following his questioning he was released while inquiries proceeded."
The official determined: "Exists no evidence that the acts or failures of any agency caused or contributed to his passing and although it was the result of a personal act it is impossible to determine his purpose."
